I have heard of Tera Patrick, but not Victoria Paris. I remember watching "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot" (in the seventies when I lived in Minnesota) and the scene of the porn theater. I believe that is the same building that houses Center Stage now. Every city has its cast of sordid characters and unsavory haunts that attract the slime of the city. I prefer to think about our more positive citizens and especially the writers that are from here and those who chose Great Falls as the setting.

The saga continues... will Claire have the last word???

I remember when I started receiving bills from my dentist from an Iowa address---I lived in Pierre, SD. They laid off their billing people and out-sourced it to Iowa! I don't care if they out-source to Mumbai, Bombay, or Boone, they are hurting their own.

In my family we always pronounced both "a" -- "kah-ahk." Of course growing up in the south of the United States, there was a lot of mispronunciation! My great-aunt owned a store in New Hampshire where she sold ka'ak, and each year after my grandmother visited, she would come home with bags of it. Before my aunt died I got the recipe from her and now I make it every Christmas. My son was born this year, and it means so much to me that I will be able to pass down this family recipe to him.

I understand your point and I do feel as well that Mr. Hedges mantra is a bit hard to swallow and its easy for him since he's not a media or tech addict like some of us. But the beauty and poignancy in his writing makes it worth reading. I take his writings as more of a an Orwellian warning to society than a religous creed to follow. But at times what he suggest may not be that great for everyone. He insisted that everyone dump their stocks and his tone is a bit preachy in the sense that we're at fault because we have a stock 401k plan which is utterly ridiculous. It would be better for the working class to participate in his 401k. Yes hate the banks all you want but why not use them for your gain. Isn't that the best revenge? If you look at it all, its pretty mind boggling and its just too big for any one person to really contain. There is great woe in the world but to give up and cave in to despair wouldn't help anyone. There is still hope through technology innovation and human empathy that one day we will learn to adapt and live symbiotically with the earth in a positive way.

It would truly be a miracle if I was to win since I have never paid the "poor man's tax."
Otherwise, if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. OK, not original, but it is close to home. However, I do feel lucky to have you as a friend.

There's an old cookbook, called "Sahtein" that's available on Amazon. The best Lebanese recipes are in this old classic cookbook, including ka'ak.

"Oh, Autumn! why so soon
Depart the hues that make thy forests glad;
Thy gentle wind and thy fair sunny noon,
And leave thee wild and sad!"
~from Bryant's "Autumn Woods"

"Bring it on"? I would not dare the weather for I know I shall loose.

Your comments bring to mind an infamous murder case in Sioux Falls. In every photo and video the news showed of the murderer, before and during the trial, he smirked and leered at the cameras. After the state successfully tried him the attorney general told all of the media to never show that person's face in any kind of media again. I don't know if the lack of media coverage after the trial was the motivation or not, but shortly after beginning his time on death row he committed a considerate suicide.

I want reporters to show respect and a few critical thinking skills when they shove a camera and microphone into a grieving face--I guess that would mean not doing so altogether.

Because I am slightly devious, I am wondering if that particular notice is from the New Yorker at all...What a great scam it would be to request magazine renewals with your CREDIT CARD & expiration date. What a great way to obtain enough information to steal your money. I yell dibs on this as a plot for my next short story...
